Mrityunjaya Reviews

From 1995-2002, Agni has been a four-man, three-piece band. Several people have wondered over the years how a three-piece band can sound so intimidating and powerful on stage.

It’s been a long road for us. But we have always felt that what separates a good band from a great band is the ‘sonic personality’ it exudes. It’s taken us years to conceptualize and nurture the sonic personality that represents Agni. Our music is not just music. It’s a union of our individual personalities, creative efforts and philosophies.

Agni is primarily the fire that nurtures. It is powerful. It is inspiring. It is art in motion. And that is how our music is developing - to symbolise the fire itself.

This year we have a new member in our band - young and upcoming guitar player Fali, who gels with our sonic personality rather well.

Agni’s compositions are a union. A union of Western sounds and Eastern sensibilities. A union of technique and emotion. A union of every day struggle and cosmic aspirations. And we believe that our new album Mrityunjaya will open up a new era in Indian music.

The songs are as rock as they come, but they are based on Indian classical ragas - even though the band does not use any Indian instru-ments.

Agni has recorded their album at one of the best recording facilities ‘Western Outdoors’ and with the very best of sound engineers and technicians. An effort that has optimised the appeal of the songs and ensured that a quality Indian product will reach out to a wider audience across the globe.

Agni has already shot the first video Tandav which is due for release on the music channels by the 1st-2nd week of December.

Agni is bound to redefine music as it is heard today. An indication of the crowd response to Agni were the shows they have played in the last couple of years in Bangalore, Pune and the mecca of Indian rock music – I-Rock at Rang Bhavan, Mumbai. As one of the banners at I-Rock proudly proclaimed, “Agni Rules.”

Agni today stands poised to become the brand name that Indian music needs. For that matter the brand name that Asian music needs. They are the fresh breath that world music is crying out for. Their only motivation is their sheer love of music. And they have proved with their travails that true love transcends all barriers.

The lyrics for the album Mrityunjaya have been written by Pune-based journalist and writer, Sanjay Maya Mukherjee.
